Culture,
food and food is what this film is about. This film is unique as its story line
is so real and happens in real life.
The
film is narrated by Toula Portokalos who like all Greek woman says she lives
for three purposes marry a Greek man, have Greek children and feed everyone
until the day she dies. The story not only reflects Greek culture but it also represents
many cultures that have similar values.
Being
old and single at 30 is enough for Toula's family to handle. She falls in love with
a non-Greek who happens to be a vegetarian, which becomes her family’s worst
nightmare!!
After finally convincing her family, It is
time for Ian to meet the family. Toula warns him that no one in the family has
ever went out with a non Greek. Her family think of Ian as a lesser person
because of him not being same background.
Her
father is convinced that a spray of Windex will cure anything. He even thinks
that all words originate from the Greek language. I had a Greek teacher like
that!!! Looks like It are a Greek thing!!
Toula tells Ian,
she has 27 cousins and introduces some "Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick,
Nick, Nicky and Gus.
The story of "My Big Fat Greek
Wedding" has been played out countless times in reality as immigrants have
intermarried from different culture and these cultural problems have been
repeated again and again in many traditions.
Personally, I love
the storyline and can very much relate being a typical 'wog' in an Australian society.
